As you may have seen from my blog and Facebook page, I have been collaborating with GPSmyCity, an app which converts travel articles, just like the ones you see here on A Brummie Home and Abroad, into an on-the-go navigational tool. Once you’ve downloaded the guide of your preferred city, you can follow in the footsteps of those who’ve visited before, or you can use it to plot your own path. And even if it’s a city you know well, it’a a great way to discover a hidden gem or two!
There are loads of suggested self-guided walks or itineraries… I’ve just checked the app for Rotterdam, our destination later in the year, and I can choose from a city orientation, a cultural walk, a modern architecture walk or a nightlife walking tour among others specific to certain parts of the city or your interests.
There are itineraries and suggested walks for over 1000 cities available, and once you’ve installed the app on a GPS-enabled IOS or Android device, it’s like you have your own personal tour guide. Without the umbrella. So if you wanted to download city walks for Rotterdam for example, you can search for “Rotterdam” and then download the Rotterdam Maps and Walks on iTunes or Google Play. The app itself is free, and articles can be downloaded and used offline, but if you want to upgrade to a fully GPS-supported route map with navigation assistance there is a small fee.
GPSmyCity have recently introduced a new subscription option, whereby users can purchase an annual subscription for $18.99 per year (about £14 for us Brits) with full access to all the walking tours and travel articles covering 1,000+ cities. And 10 lucky readers of A Brummie Home and Abroad can win one of these annual subscriptions!
