You know those Sundays when you just can’t choose between a traditional Sunday roast dinner and a good old pie and mash? Well thanks to Pieminister’s new offering, called the Sunday Best, you no longer need to choose.
For £9.95 – and £1 extra for bottomless gravy – you can choose from any of their pie range of 13 fillings, on a bed of creamy mash, topped with a Yorkshire pudding loaded with carrot & swede mash and roasted baby potatoes. The (savoury) cherry on top is a pig-in-blanket and juicy pork crackling. With most Sunday Roasts in the city centre coming in at around the £12-£15 mark, this represents great value for money. And it’s not just for the carnivores among us. There are four vegetarian options, including the wonderfully named Kevin Pie which is also suitable for vegans. And there are gluten-free alternatives available to. Pieminister really do try and cater for all.

We were invited along to Birmingham’s Pieminister restaurant on Waterloo Street to sample either the Sunday Best or any of the choices from the newly launched Autumn menu. There are new sides available in the form of loaded fries, and new dessert options (including the vegan Gold Digger) available if you’re greedy – like us – and go for a full Sunday lunch and pudding option. We’re fifteen minutes early for our booking, but there are a number of tables available when we arrive. Soon though, the place has filled up, and it’s encouraging to see – from our people-watching table in the window – so many walk-in customers who are enticed in to the restaurant. Probably by the promise of a Sunday lunch pie.
We both choose the Sunday Best – how could we not? I go for the Matador pie – British beef steak, chorizo, olives and butter beans, whilst Mr Fletche opts for the Deer Stalker – wild British venison, bacon, red wine and green lentils. We found there was sufficient gravy without having to plump for the bottomless option. There is also horseradish sauce served in a separate little pot in case you’re not a fan of having this slathered all over your food. The food is served quickly, and is piping hot – which is handy as I had to take several photos from several angles, allowing time for my pie to cool down. That’s very considerate of them. The pies are delicious, with the perfect ratio of chunky tender meat, flavoursome gravy and wonderful pastry. My Yorkshire pudding is a little tough to tear through, and Mr Fletche thinks the roasted potatoes could be a little more, well, roasted, but these minor points do not detract from a great autumnal Sunday lunch.
Despite clearing our plates of pie, we decide we have just about enough room for dessert. Although the hot options of sticky toffee or hot chocolate pud sound tempting, we both opt for a lighter soft scoop sundae – the Cherry Pie for me with vanilla ice cream, cherries, frangipane and toasted almonds (like a deconstructed bakewell tart) and the Honey Bee for Mr Fletche – frozen yoghurt (which I insisted on calling Fro-Yo, much to Mr Fletche’s disgust), honeycomb, honey, pistachio and figs. The sundaes are served in a wafer basket. Which saves on washing up. Do not devour the wafer basket until you’ve finished with your soft scoop though, otherwise you’ll get a plate of melted ice-cream soup. Which does not save on washing up and may well end up on your lap. Lesson learned.
Despite the efficient and attentive service, we never once felt rushed, and judging by the all-round consistent customer service, we weren’t treated any differently from our fellow paying customers. The restaurant has an industrial feel with its exposed pipework in the ceiling, brickwork and lighting, yet remains light due to the huge plate glass windows looking onto the street and onto Victoria Square.
Our lunch was entirely complementary (thank you Pieminister peeps – you’re the best!), but I certainly wouldn’t think twice about visiting again as a paying customer. It’s our second visit and we’ve enjoyed our meals here both times.
