10 Travel-Related “Would You Rather” Questions

Would You Rather? 10 Travel-Related Dilemmas to Ponder

Travel dreaming. It’s one of my favourite hobbies. Whiling away the hours, thinking about destinations you may or may never visit. Sights you may or may never see. And sometimes in travel you have to make choices. Beach or mountains? City break or hiking in the countryside? Instagram hotspots or digital detox? Which led me thinking of a whole heap of “Would You Rather…” type questions on a travel theme. Play along at home and let me know your answers. Remember, there’s no right or wrong decision…

Would you Rather… miss your flight or lose your luggage?

I can confirm that almost missing a flight is stressful. Especially when it’s because of something as insignificant as a mobile phone. You can read that story here. If I was coming home, I’d definitely rather lose my luggage. After all, I’d have plenty of clothes at home, and luggage generally makes it’s way back to it’s owner eventually. But on a flight out it’s a bit trickier. I hate missing out on vital travel time but I’d also hate having to spend the first day having to replenish my missing luggage! Marginally, I think I’d rather lose my luggage.

…Spend the night in a luxury hotel with a stranger, or in a dodgy hostel with your best friend?

Ma and Pa Lee have always instilled an “as long are you’re together you’ll be happy” philosophy in me so I’d definitely take the dodgy hostel with a good companion over luxury with a stranger any time. It gives you a great shared story to retell!

…Take free flights for the rest of your life, or eat for free in restaurants for the rest of your life?

I love food. Mr Fletche will confirm that I’m always scoping out where and when my next meal will be. Even if I’ve only just finished my last meal. But I’m also not a food snob. Cheap and cheerful generally does it for me. Flights unfortunately aren’t always cheap (or cheerful) so I would definitely opt for the freebie flights instead.

…Be left in the bush on a safari, or be left in the ocean on a scuba diving trip?

I’m not a fan of deep open waters. You’ll occasionally find me bobbing around off the side of a boat but always when I know I can easily clamber back aboard when I get cold and tired. So I’d definitely rather take my chances with the wild animals. I’d hunker down in a bush and try not to smell like prey…

…Have an everlasting phone battery, or unlimited wi-fi?

I use my phone for so much more than the internet. It’s my alarm clock, my watch, my notebook, my camera and my diary. As much as love endlessly scrolling through Instagram and blogging on the go, an everlasting phone battery would be my choice.

…Only visit places you’ve already been, or only visit places you’ve never been?

This is a tough one as there are so many places on my travel wishlist. To restrict myself to the latter would mean never visiting New Zealand or Singapore or the Pacific Northwest. Never seeing the Northern Lights in Scandinavia. And never sampling a Guinness in Dublin. But I’ve visited some awesome places that I’d love to revisit: Vancouver, San Francisco, New York. Brussels, Rotterdam, Venice. Costa Rica. The Maldives. Kenya. I think I could easily rediscover these destinations over and over again so I’d choose the former option.

…Sit next to a chatterbox on a plane, or a crying baby?

Don’t make me choose! This is possibly my two worst nightmares! A crying baby may also come with pooping and vomiting. And even the best noise-cancelling headphones couldn’t stop that. So I’d rather sit next to a chatterbox, in the hope that I could pop on those headphones and deter the chatterbox from making further conversation. If that doesn’t work, I’d just add a sleep mask to those headphones and fake sleep…

…Travel the world for a year on a shoestring budget, or travel for one month in complete luxury?

I like a certain degree of luxury when we travel. I’m not talking first-class travel, champagne and 5-star spa hotels with a private butler at my beck and call. But I like a bathroom I can call my own, a decent luggage allowance and sitting down to eat with a knife and fork occasionally. I’m not sure I’m cut out for travelling super-budget-style, but I’d sure like to experience that first-class travel, champagne and a 5-star spa hotel with a private butler at my beck and call…

…Be able to speak a language fluently but not understand when other people speak, or be able to understand a language but not able to speak it?

I always try to learn a few words in the language of countries I’m planning to travel to. My Duolingo is full of languages I’ve started but abandoned. Danish. Spanish. Italian. And now Japanese. But no matter how confident I feel in my mind I always feel a bit unsure breaking out the conversational tidbits. What if they think I’m fluent and carry on the dialogue? Which is highly unlikely considering I’m likely to follow any foreign phrase quickly with it’s English equivalent. “BonJourGoodMorning”. “ObrigadoThankYou”. “IlContoPerFavoreCanIHaveTheBillPlease?” But I’d definitely like the ability to automatically translate what others are saying to me. I find that pointing and the art of mime goes a long way when travelling!

…Never suffer jetlag, or never gain holiday weight?

Thought this would be a toughie but on reflection it’s an easy decision. Although jetlag knocks me around after a long-haul flight, I’m much more likely to regularly take shorter flights. Whereas I am always going to eat naughty things and get to the grips with the local alcohol. So I’ll deal with the three-day fug in exchange for a never-expanding waistband thank you very much!
